Healthy or insane shelf 2

Somehow I keep getting sick. My two boys started full-time at school last September and it seems that everytime they pick up an illness they pass it on to me. But while they become slugish for a day or two, I seem to get some full-on adult version that half kills me. Ok, so that last statement would be obscene to anyone with a real illness, but it feels pretty bad to me at the time!

I consider myself to be pretty fit these days. I don’t drink alchohol any more, don’t smoke, workout regularly, sleep well and I have a very good diet which contains very little junk food. Compared to say, ten years ago I look after myself much better and feel generally very healthy. But I keep getting these illnesses.

So I started thinking about what I could do to give myself the edge to beat them and perhaps boost my all-round health as well. I’d never really liked the idea of taking supplements as I thought that you didn’t need them if you had a good diet. But now I’m not so sure. Of course, the taking of supplements has the so-called experts split down the middle as usual with their judgements.

But I read an article at the Times yesterday that made me wonder about how healthy my food really is. I ended up heading out and buying what I believe is a good quality multivitamin supplement that I’m starting to take every day, though I still have doubts. It’s a case of - what harm can it do? - I guess. But where does it all end? Do I start popping fish oil pills next?

So what are your opinions of supplements and specifically multivitamin supplements?

    Vitamins Bargains…

I believe that each dosage is related to each person. I completely relate to your frustration though because the market is so huge and confusing. I have been taking vitamins on and off for over 10 years and I don’t get flu very often at all which is s…

I too don’t drink any more, eat fairly well, work out, sleep OK, and have 2 little girls at home. For years I was getting sick every 2-3 months. Over the last 2 years I have been taking a multi-vitamin in the AM and 1000 miligrams of Vitamin C (with rose hips) at night. I believe the rose hips act as a time release agent, but not positive. Since starting this regimine, I rarely get sick, and when I do, it is much less severe.

    I hope that helps.

Hi Larry, thanks for the comment.

It sure does help and is exactly the type of specific ‘data’ I’m after. I’m currently using a multivitamin pill that I hope will have beneficial effects. Very interesting about the Vitamin C as well - I’ll look into that.

As an update I’m also taking an Omega 3 Fish Oil capsule daily.

    Hi Tim,

There is an alternative to this: downshifting.

The thrust of the Times article is “because we’re all rushing around so frantically we need to prop our lifestyles up with multi-vits instead of eating properly”.

The answer would be to stop rushing around so madly and start eating properly. Put your health before your job.

    All best wishes

Drink at least 2L of water everyday. Consider working out and using a steam room/sauna after. It’s a great way to flush the toxins out from the body. Rik
